The real reason that we didn't see & hear this great music earlier was the segregation & this version is by far the best and grooviest. But Elvis' not to blame. One should never forget that it were the white people of America who banned black music. Elvis had to overcome this too in the start. And he did. It almost ruined his career after he performed this song live on the Ed Sullivan Show 1956. It was much too bluesy and sexy. Lennon once said: Elvis didn't die 1977. He died in the army.

Ok, watching this I wonder how in the hell Elvis' version took off like it did? When you compare Big Mama's musicianship with the white boys of Elvis' band, there is no comparison. Not to say that Elvis' musicians didn't put together a sound, but, it lacks soul.

Aretha Franklin doesn't hold a candle to this legendary Blues-Soul singer. She recorded the original "Hound Dog" and Elvis turned it into a white-radio-acceptable song. Willie Mae Thorton forever!
