Any connection one scene seemingly has to another is simply due to our own assumption that it does. The film was meant to shock the late 1920's audiences, though through time more and more films began to use the same techniques as this one, hence lessening its shock value today. During the premier Buñuel claimed to have kept stones in his pockets to throw at the audience in the case of an uproar of disapproval.
