First of all, it's easier to make the fluorescent tube light up than make the incandescent one light up, which I'm assuming is why he didn't use an incandescent one for the power lines (cool trick I must say, though). Second, the frequency of a power line in the US is 60Hz, far lower than the 2.4GHz frequency used to excite water molecules in a microwave.
